As Featured In a McDonald’s Meal

The Quarter Pounder is a hamburger sold by international fast food chain McDonald’s, so named for containing a patty with a precooked weight of 4 oz, a quarter of a pound (113.4 g). It was introduced in 1971.

The Big Mac had two previous names, both of which failed in the marketplace: the Aristocrat and the Blue Ribbon Burger.

In December 2008, Burger King purchased the rights to an advertising campaign that centered around a taste-test marketing campaign, dubbed “Whopper Virgins.” The test claimed to target participants who were unaware of the existence of Burger King or McDonald’s, and had never eaten a hamburger. Three remote areas of the world – Baan Khun Chang Kiean, Thailand; Kulusuk, Greenland; and Budeşti, Romania were targeted. In the test, the “virgins” were asked to try both the McDonald’s Big Mac and the Burger King Whopper, and give their preference, if any. According to the advertisements and accompanying mini-documentary, the Whopper was the most popular sandwich among the test subjects.

[Advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky‘s] client list includes Burger King, Volkswagen, Coke Zero, Microsoft, American Express OPEN, Sprite, Geek Squad and Domino‘s.

Big Mac Man

Big Mac Sauce is delivered to McDonald’s restaurants in sealed canisters designed by Sealright, from which it is meant to be directly dispensed using a special calibrated “sauce gun” that dispenses a specified amount of the sauce for each pull of the trigger. Its design is similar to a caulking gun.

The Big Mac is a type of cheeseburger, a signature sandwich sold by the McDonald’s chain of fast-food restaurants since 1968, made with beef patties, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onion, with a “special sauce” and a sesame seed bun. The Big Mac was invented in Uniontown, Pennsylvania by Jim Delligatti in 1967. Customer response around there was so good that it rolled-out nationally in 1968.

“Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.” is a trademarked slogan first used by McDonald’s in 1975. The saying has remained popular even though it is not in official use by McDonald’s. Although shown here properly punctuated, it was often spoken rapidly in ads as a single word.
